The History of Directory Assistance and The Reverse Phonebook
Filed Under Reverse-PhoneBook |
The reverse phone number search has evolved as a solution to the problem faced by many people who need to access information quickly. Over the last century the ability of people to contact each other has increased dramatically through various technologies such as the telephone, radio and the internet. With each form of communication made available, a corresponding method of searching the same information has been required.
For the telephone one of the most basic methods of searching for a person’s contact information is by using a telephone book. Given a specific name and location it was relatively straightforward to find the corresponding telephone number. However this was limited to actually having access to a telephone book for the geographic location one needed to call.
The next step was directory assistance. This allowed people to dial an operator who had access to the information contained in all of the telephone books and who could search this database while you waited. This means that there is no longer a reliance on a physical book and this service can be accessed from any telephone. Originally however, given a name and address the operator would then provide you with a phone number, but not the other way around.
With the advancement of the internet, the ability to search a database of information has been made available to everyone. This includes being able to conduct reverse searches. This is when a telephone number, either a landline or a cell phone number is entered into a reverse phonebook and the corresponding name and address is returned. Additional information such as other phone numbers associated with the same account as well as the carrier used by the account owner can also be displayed.
It has never been easier to search for the contact information of a friend, relative or even nuisance caller and it can all be done right from your computer at home.
